This post has nothing to do with classical music. I’m posting Brazilian pop music. It’s not exactly pop; I guess that I would call this the Brazilian equivalent of Joni Mitchell. I speak Brazilian Portuguese, and I think that it is the most beautiful of the romance languages.

O meu amor me deixou
Levou minha identidade
Não sei mais bem onde estou
Nem onde a realidade

Ah, se eu fosse marinheiro
Era eu quem tinha partido
Mas meu coração ligeiro
Não se teria partido
Ou se partisse colava
Com cola de maresia

Eu amava e desamava
Sem peso e com poesia
Ah, se eu fosse marinheiro

Seria doce meu lar
Não só o Rio de Janeiro
A imensidão e o mar
Leste oeste norte e sul
Onde um homem se situa
Quando o sol sobre o azul
Ou quando no mar a lua

Não buscaria conforto nem juntaria dinheiro
Um amor em cada porto

Ah, se eu fosse marinheiro

My love left me
He took my identity
I don’t know where I am anymore
Nor where reality is

Ah, if I were a sailor
It was I who was the one who had left
But my light heart
Would not have left
Or if it had broken, it would be glued
With sea spray

I loved and despised
Without weight and with poetry
Ah, if I were a sailor

My home would be sweet
Not only Rio de Janeiro
Also, immensity and the sea
East, West, North, and South
Wherever a man lies
When the sun above the blue
Or when at sea looking at the moon

I would not seek comfort nor gather money
I’d have a lover in every port

Ah, if I were a sailor

Você entrou no trem
E eu na estação
Vendo um céu fugir
Também não dava mais
Para tentar
Lhe convencer
A não partir…

E agora, tudo bem
Você partiu
Para ver outras paisagens
E o meu coração embora
Finja fazer mil viagens
Fica batendo parado
Naquela estação….

E o meu coração embora
Finja fazer mil viagens
Fica batendo parado
Naquela estação…

Você entrou no trem
E eu na estação
Vendo um céu fugir
Também não dava mais
Para tentar
Lhe convencer
A não partir…

E agora, tudo bem
Você partiu
Para ver outras paisagens
E o meu coração embora
Finja fazer mil viagens
Fica batendo parado
Naquela estação….

E o meu coração embora
Finja fazer mil viagens
Fica batendo parado
Naquela estação…(2x)

You got on the train
And I at the station
Watching a sky flee
It was no good
To try
to convince you
Not to leave …

And now, everything is okay
You left
To see other vistas
And although my heart
Pretends to go on a thousand journeys
It remains beating and stopped
At that station ….

And although my heart
Pretends to make a thousand journeys
It remains beating and stopped
At that station ….

You got on the train
And I at the station
Watching a sky flee
It was no good
To try
to convince you
Not to leave …

And now, everything is okay
You left
To see other vistas
And although my heart
Pretends to go on a thousand journeys
It remains beating and stopped
At that station

And although my heart
Pretends to go on a thousand journeys
It remains beating and stopped
At that station ….
